Philly 3.3.10
Wow!!!!!!!!!! I just told coty this was better than bloomsbury - for me.....
For the record I was relatively well behaved this eve - not quite the "loud american" from bloomsbury but trust me I carried my weight........anyway sitting here with a very large glass of scotch so I absolve myeself from any stupidity about to be uttered......... Showed up a bit early and was blessed with a little sound check and the acquaintance of the esteemed mr wibberly who I felt like I knew like a brother but still awesome to meet up with the flesh and bone.......and then of course ford - tried my best to be halfway normal without bowing in awe and managed to do relatively well without making a complete ass of myself. Wonderfully nice guy - looking very forward to tomorrow. Anyway to cut to the chase and without commentary here is the set list: Nothing At All I Don't Care What You Call Me Go To Hell The Hell With the World Requiem Stephen Panic Song For the Road Making Up For Lost Time Waiting For the Storm State of the Union Call to Arms Encore!!!! Missouri - aborted due to technical Down By the Sea Laughing Aloud (YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Cheer Up Show went on forever..........absolutely brilliant with Ford in an excellent mood and so very chatty as he does so well......some of the same stuff heard before but other hysterical stories etc like how fox news is a motivator for his songwriting (requiem/state of the union) and got him to shout out his american accets (the alabama story and accent but also got the gay new yorker accent - hilarious).......great story about boston in the winter and personal motivation on call to arms........a little different twist to the listening to bruce with wibbs in the car on this one...........very nice though! So he finishes and no laughing aloud so I figured this is america so we get an encore - and boy did we!! Two songs he stated never been played in North America - Sea and Laughing (nice) followed up by Cheer Up as the closer..............absolutely stellar. Lots of pics and should be great video to come - we have the entire encore on video............there were several up front with the same flip video going so should be some good youtubes to circ.........one gal even had a brilliant invention for her flip camera - a stand!! unfortunately looks like she had an earlier version as she wasnt taping the second half............just a wonderful wonderful venue - cerainly understand why they like it so much. Ok about shouted out..............more to come and off to NYC in the am.............. Just an awesome awesome magnificent evening...........!!! |

RE: Philly 3.3.10
that was awesome - hilarious when he said "what's it take to get a beer around here?"
just looking through my notes - yeah I know - and got most in the above but did miss the "screaming!!!!!!" notation next to Panic haha Making Up For Lost Time was excellent with an extended intro and outro if you will - also said this song was in the same context as song for the road in terms of the joy of innocence and travel......... when he came out for the encore he said "I normally don't do them but since I didn't explain that to you I will make an exception!" Laughing Aloud was moving and unreal............I worried when a few idiots started talking loudly at the end of the bar but we quickly moved to the more intense part of the song and Ford drowned them out........and Cheer Up was absolutely stellar culminating with the trip to the bar - awesome!! ok one vid up.......Go To Hell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SpR-pZIga8 uploading the encore now.........only 1:15 to go!!!!! going to try a feeble attempt at posting pics now.......... how the hell do you post pics? guess will handle when back in nyc.......... |

RE: Philly 3.3.10
So David -
What was the crowd like? Did they know who he was? Were they familiar with the songs? I think Philly has always been a big Ford town. Thanks for the full report by the way! Excellent stuff. |

Thank you for the detailed review!
Must have been an awesome show. And you got Laughing Aloud... I'm always very jealous of that! ![]() Mr Wibb said on Twitter that the show was sold out and they had to add another date in Philly later in the month. So it sounds like things went great!

(03-04-2010 02:23 PM)davidcotyalex Wrote: now how about how to post pics? You need an account on some photo uploading service like Flickr or Photobucket. Not sure if those work over there. You host them there, and cut&paste the [IMG] address into your message here. like this; and when you preview you should get something like this (only possibly without the spotlight on the knees)

RE: Philly 3.3.10
Ahhh missed the slash!
According to Wibbs 80 paid but probably more like 100 in the room - pretty good I would say?? And he went off at an hour and 45 so pretty solid show by all means............. So the Call to Arms bit - now take with a grain of salt as details tend to go directly proportionate to the amount of scotch consumed and call to arms was the closer of the set...........the way I would understand it is the boys came up with the idea iin the car as suggested but then the whole song came together "on a cold miserable eve in Boston" - I see also personal motivation which i think was saying the evening provided that moment of introspection if you will to come up with the real feeling and intent of the song..........I think?!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() State of the Union...........brilliant

RE: Philly 3.3.10
great pics! Thanks for posting them!
I'll add to the Call to Arms story. He said he was having one of those nights where "a musician starts to think about hanging it up and getting a proper job" (or something like that). He was discouraged about struggling to succeed in an industry where only the most terrible songs ever get played on the radio. (Then he added a caveat to that excepting WXPN--they've been longtime supporters of his music, and they own World Cafe Live.) So he envisioned Call to Arms as a rallying cry for people like us--like him and everyone in the audience--who want more from our musical experiences than vapid pop. As you may have guessed, it was a long story...as were most of his stories throughout the evening. I've never heard him so chatty! It was great, though, cuz he's really funny. angel. Maybe the greatest of heroes inhabit the stories that nobody hears. |

I had to respond: I was the said gal with the silly tripod. I ordered it off of amazon not too long ago, believing it was a full-size, grown-up tripod (judging by the pictures posted online, it looked normal). Imagine my surprise when it showed up in an envelope in the mail. It looks like a prop for my old Barbie doll. But, it proved to be useful! I also ordered my flip mino at amazon - used, and at half price. It worked well until it froze after "song for the road." =( We're planning to come back on the 25th, though. What an incredible show. This is the 3rd time we've seen him live, but first time where he was the headliner. He opened for Ingrid Michaelson when we saw her at WCL two years ago, and again at the TLA a few months later. I usually tune out the opening acts to shows, but David Ford was unforgettable. got 4 videos up: nothing at all/i don't care what you call me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKggjGQi4TM go to hell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju-2hg8IibA panic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g457UB27dw4 song for the road: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssPQqswFbZM BTW, I did not appreciate Greg Holden's NY apartment/toilet story. I have an intense phobia of things of that nature, and I could feel my blood pressure rising and my heart pounding, and my eyes teared up. I like to pretend it was all a dream that never actually happened. Holden was a good performer though, I remembered him when he opened for Ingrid back in September at the TLA. Good set, good songs, great show overall. Can't wait for the 25th! |
