Every Time
Just wondered what people's thoughts are on the new, album version of Every Time?

I'm not quite sure about it ... I think it starts off 'too big', too grandiose, and it it feels like it doesn't have anywhere else to go from there ... and yet once it settles into the quiet section in the middle, and begins to build towards the 'mother f***er' it's absolutely incredible.

Just downloaded it.
TBH I still prefer the Austerity Measures version. The new one seems a little over produced, almost gimmicky with the build up and break at "I choose this mother f***er"… think it's possibly because the silence lasts uncomfortably long after the break.
But who knows?! It may yet grow on me after a few plays. But I kinda doubt it. I tend to like the simplicity and folky feel of Ford's music in general.

RE: Every Time
I completely disagree - I love it. I think because we've had the 'demo' version for over a year now people have got used to the stripped-back version, which obviously had its own charm.

I love the Spector-esque 'wall of sound' on it - very Springsteeny. The lyrics need the huge build-up towards the end, and although the delivery of the "mother-f***er" line and subsequent short pause might seem a little jarring at first, I think it's just because we're used to the original.

I've listened to nothing else for the past 24 hours. It's a Ford classic already in my eyes. Outstanding production, and I'm not sure if it's just me, but Ford's vocal has at times a fragility about it that adds a bit more poignancy.

I like the 'uncomfortably long' silence in the new Every Time - it exaggerates the awkward impact of the 'mother f***er' line.

I just find myself wishing that the first couple of minutes of the song were more restrained. Maybe it will work better in the context of the album, coming as it does after 'Throwaway', which seems to be a beautiful, simple, guitar-and-vocal affair.

RE: Every Time
I always thought it was fairly obvious that the AM version of Every Time was just a demo, and always thought there'd be a 'bigger' version at some point. I like the Charge version more every time (no pun intended) I hear it.

I also think the first couple of minutes of the song need to be loud, so it can drop down in volume and intensity to "The sun's going down on what's left of today..." which then builds up to the mother-f***ing crescendo. The 'demo' version was a bit one-paced in comparison.

I think you lot need to get with the times Wink
